450 pounds of marijuana discovered during Marcellus traffic stop

Cass County police say they uncovered 450 pounds of marijuana and a handgun during a traffic stop at M-40 and Marcellus Highway on Tuesday. A sheriff’s deputy found the illegal handgun in the vehicle and decided to investigate further, according to police. That’s when they say he discovered 15 large bales made up of numerous bricks of packaged marijuana inside the vehicle. The marijuana has a street value of $720,000.

Two people were arrested for conspiracy to deliver marijuana over 45 kilograms — a 15 year felony, delivery of marijuana over 45 kilograms and possession of marijuana. The driver also faces charges for possession of a concealed weapon and multiple counts of possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony.

The two were booked into Cass County Jail. The passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Hector Manuel Diaz-Batista, was arraigned and is being held on $500,000 bond. The driver, 43-year-old Rolando Diaz-Aybar is also being held on $500,000 bond.
