Cannabis user had Samurai swords in car

A Loveston man was found in possession of ‘potentially lethal’ Samurai swords while smoking cannabis in his car, a court has been told. Police officers uncovered three swords in the boot of Christian William Nicholas’ car at a Pembroke Dock car park, at 2am on August 16th. Nicholas pleaded guilty to possessing offensive weapons in a public place and 0.4grammes of cannabis when he appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court last week. Prosecutor David Weale said the 23-year-old was caught smoking a cigarette containing cannabis with a friend in his car.

A police search of the car uncovered the swords. Nicholas said he purchased the swords from a friend for £10 several days earlier and had put them into the boot of his car. However, he had not returned them to his home address where he was planning to display them on a wall in his room, stating he was staying with friends to be closer to his place of work as a delivery driver. Defending, Mike Kelleher said Nicholas was from a military family and his father, an army major, was a keen collector of military memorabilia, an interest he shared. He added that there was “a treasure box of military items” at the family home and the swords were ornamental. However, the court was told the weapons were ‘potentially lethal’. District Judge Vivian Manning-Davies said it was an unusual case and sentenced Nicholas to a community order of 150 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £85 in costs and was fined £50 for cannabis possession.
