Gov. Christie said Friday he would veto a measure to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana. Christie, a Republican, made the comments at a town hall event Friday in Readington, Hunterdon County. It’s the first time the former federal prosecutor has publicly taken a position on the issue. He is focused on implementing a strict state medical-marijuana program, Christie said, and easing up on pot laws would be contrary to that goal. The state shouldn’t undercut federal drug laws, he added. An Assembly panel unanimously approved a measure last month that would make possession of 15 grams or less of the plant a civil offense, punishable by a fine, rather than a criminal offense. A vote in the full Assembly was postponed in order to draft amendments.
