Relic has announced the Company of Heroes Online Beta will be shut down on March 31st, 2011 across all regions. No specific plans were mentioned as to what will happen with the free-to-play, microtransaction version of Relic’s popular real-time strategy game moving forward.
As stated on a Company of Heroes Online closure FAQ, “We are still working on our plans for the Company of Heroes franchise and are not ready to discuss details yet. We will be leveraging all the data and feedback the Company of Heroes Online Beta generated.”
This raises a few issues for players who were paying and playing Company of Heroes Online. As of now no more COHO Cash can be purchased via the website, though players with existing Cash can make in-game purchases until March 31st. Refunds are not possible for COHO Cash. If you’ve got a Cash Card, you might be able to get a refund, but that’s up to the retailer from which you made the purchase.
Any who registered before February 1st can pick up a copy of Company of Heroes Gold Edition for $4.99 through THQ’s online store. The Gold Edition includes the original Company of Heroes and the Opposing Fronts expansion and would otherwise cost $30.
Though there’s no confirmation that another version of Company of Heroes Online will appear, the post does mention, “We are excited to reveal the next evolution of the series in the near future.”
