El Cajon man gets 14 years for marijuana tunnels

A San Diego County man has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute nearly 14 tons of marijuana that arrived in the U.S. through Mexican border tunnels. The San Diego Union-Tribune says Victor Valladares-Real was sentenced Monday in federal court.

The 26-year-old El Cajon man was arrested in connection with two tunnels that were discovered last year in the Otay Mesa area of San Diego. Authorities arrested him after watching him escort a marijuana-loaded tractor-trailer from a warehouse. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy.

Another man, 45-year-old Daniel Navarro-Chavez of Perris, also pleaded guilty and was sentenced last month to 15 years and eight months in prison. Nearly a dozen people are being prosecuted in connection with the tunnels.
