Game Industry Professionals Unveil Play For Japan

A collection of game industry professionals announced today the launch of Play for Japan, an online charity outlet designed to raise awareness and funds for the recent disaster overseas. The worldwide campaign will support the work of the American Red Cross, Global Giving, International Medical Corps, Save the Children, and UNICEF through the promotion of rare gaming goods at auction.

“The goal of Play For Japan is to aggregate and promote online auctions of items culled from the resources of its members – videogame rarities, art, signed games, etc. – in order to generate donations for disaster relief.”

Check out handful of items currently up for auction below.

  • A Brutal Legend Eddie Riggs statue signed by Tim Schafer
  • A Super Mario Kart SNES cartridge signed and illustrated by Shigeru Miyamoto
  • A copy of Killer7 signed by Suda 51

Several auctions are drawing to a close today, including GameZone’s THQ, Square Enix, and THQ bundles. The latter of the three includes a a real-life Parrot AR Drone. Game Informer’s own offerings are counting down. To reiterate, all proceeds from any Play for Japan auction are donated to one of the aforementioned charities.

You may have astutely noticed that I am involved at the ground level of Play for Japan, making this a bizarre bit of news for me to write up. Being a part of the project is exciting and humbling, however, as the industry-wide effort is growing exponentially and poised to make a very real contribution to the cause.
