Senate Bill 423, carried by Senate Majority Leader Jeff Essmann, proposes a major reduction in the state’s medical marijuana industry. Analysts say it may reduce the number of legal users from 28,000 to less than 2,000.
Essmann’s measure would overturn the current marijuana law and replace it with a tighter law-enforcement friendly system.
The House is planning to hear the measure Wednesday afternoon.
The bill’s sponsor expects significant changes.
House Republican leaders say they are skeptical of attempting to regulate the marijuana industry, but plan to work on regulation in case the governor vetoes their favored repeal measure.
