Ireland May Be the Next Country to Legalize Recreational Marijuana Use

It’s quite evident that no war has failed quite as spectacularly as the war on drugs. Trillions of dollars in revenue have been shamefully spent around the world, millions of otherwise law abiding citizens have been arrested, and yet drugs have never been cheaper or more accessible than they are now.

Can decriminalizing or completely legalizing marijuana help bring an end to the criminal element that thrives due to our current policy on drugs? Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, an avid marijuana legalization activist and Irish Teachta Dála or TD, which is a member of Dáil Éireann from the lower house of the Oireachtas, is curious to see if it would indeed have a positive impact on his home country of Ireland.

Flanagan has launched his Cannabis Regulation Bill 2013, which would legalize marijuana use and allow for the cultivation of plants for both personal and commercial purposes. He claims his bill would provide a “practical way to regulate the scale and use of the drug” and “minimalize harm to minors and harm to adults”.

“This bill comes at a time when legalization of cannabis is being looked at in new light all around the planet,” Flanagan avowed, referring to the latest Gallup poll showing that 58 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana for recreational dedications.

Flanagan also asserted that the launching of his marijuana legalization bill is “an exciting time for anyone involved in attempting to repeal prohibition in relation to cannabis anywhere in world.”
