Justin Scott-Wesley arrested on misdemeanor marijuana charge

Georgia receiver Justin Scott-Wesley, out for the season after knee surgery, was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana charge on Thursday in Athens. UGA police found Scott-Wesley, a redshirt sophomore, to be in possession of less than one ounce of marijuana in his dorm room on Wednesday. Police also reported finding a glass smoking pipe and a grinder at the scene. Scott-Wesley, 20, was booked under his given name, Justin Bernard Wesley, and charged with possession/use of a drug object.

“I’m disappointed in the news about Justin,” head coach Mark Richt said in a statement. “We will discipline him according to our policy. We will also educate him, provide him counsel so he can learn from this, and be able to move forward in a very positive direction. I’m confident he will respond properly to the correction process.” Georgia’s student-athlete drug policy calls for a one-game suspension for a first violation. Since Scott-Wesley is out for the season, it’s possible he would end up suspended the first game of next year, which is at home against Clemson. Scott-Wesley tore his ACL in the second half of Georgia’s win over Tennessee on Oct. 5. A police report stated that the receiver was on crutches when confronted in his dorm room.

A graduate of Mitchell-Baker High School, Scott-Wesley is still Georgia’s second-leading receiver (16 catches for 311 yards) despite not playing in the past two games. His 85-yard touchdown catch against South Carolina remains one of the Bulldogs’ highlights of the season. According to a UGA police report, dispatch received a complaint on Wednesday from a resident assistant (RA) at Rooker Hall, who reported the odor of marijuana emanating from the area of two dorm rooms. An officer came to the dorm at about 10:48 p.m., met the RA, and they went to the dorm room. Scott-Wesley and a female were inside; the female was cleared of any wrongdoing.

“I asked Wesley if he knew why were there and he said, ‘smoke,'” the police officer wrote in his incident report. At first Scott-Wesley denied that the smell was marijuana, and denied having any marijuana in his dorm room. When the officer asked if it would be okay to search the room, Scott-Wesley replied at first that “there’s none in there,” and then asked a third time, he stated “It’s all gone.” At that point Scott-Wesley admitted that there had been some marijuana in the room, saying he had smoked it earlier in the day, the police report states. After going back and forth some more, Scott-Wesley finally consented to a search.

The player admitted he had smoked the marijuana through a pipe, according to the report, and upon a search the officer discovered two small red Ziplog baggies containing what proved to be pot. It wasn’t until the next morning, when tests proved the substance to be marijuana, that a warrant was issued for Scott-Wesley’s arrest. He was released on bond later on Thursday.
