Liam Hemsworth defends Miley Cyrus’ marijuana controversy, says actress ‘makes me really happy’

When Liam Hemsworth turned 22 last month, girlfriend Miley Cyrus presented him with a gift that quickly went viral on the Internet: A phallic birthday cake. But the actor, who will next star in much-anticipated blockbuster “The Hunger Games,” likely wasn’t angry at her over the controversy the racy photos sparked – he’s more upset with the people who are so quick to criticize her behavior. “She’s in a room full of her best friends,” Hemsworth told the March issue of Details about Cyrus’ comments that she “smokes way too much f–king weed” in her birthday video. “And you have one person who comes in there and videos it. The poor girl can’t have one night where she can feel safe in her own world. It’s ridiculous.”   Liam and Cyrus, 19, have been dating for about two-and-a-half years now, since first working together on the set of “The Last Song.” But the Aussie actor wasn’t always so enamored with the former Disney star, however. When he first landed an audition for his part opposite Cyrus for the Nicholas Sparks adaptation, he joked to older brother Chris, “I just had an audition with Miley Cyrus! How funny is that?” The two brothers “grew up surfing and stuff … that’s why we can laugh. This business is ridiculous,” he said of mocking the entertainment industry at large. Now, however, the up-and-coming actor is happily in a relationship with Cyrus, having even met her famous dad, Billy Ray. “She makes me really happy,” he said of the “LOL” actress. “When you start, you want to be professional, but when you’re filming those scenes with someone and pretending to love them, you’re not human if you don’t feel something.”
