Newport, AR (KAIT) – A traffic stop ends with a man arrested for possession of marijuana. According to a press release from the Newport Police Department, Officer Weston Gates initially stopped Robert Lee Rucker, 19, of Newport for not wearing a seat belt. When Gates approached the car, Rucker told him that his driver’s license was suspended. While officer Gates was confirming the status of Rucker’s driver’s license, Newport Police Captain Larry Dulaney arrived on the scene and noticed Rucker was moving around in the car. As Dulaney approached the car, he saw Rucker remove a large plastic bag containing smaller bags of what appeared to be marijuana from his crotch area. Dulaney says Rucker tried to place the bag in the glove compartment of the car. As officers removed Rucker from his car, Rucker threw the bag onto the passenger side floor. Officers then searched the vehicle and found a partially burned marijuana cigarette and two plastic baggies, one which contained marijuana residue. On site, the officers conduct a field test of the suspected marijuana, which came back positive. The plastic bag of marijuana contained 26 smaller bags of marijuana with an average weight of about 1.8 grams per bag. Officers arrested Rucker and transported him to the Jackson County Detention Center. Rucker is expected to be charged with possession of a schedule VI controlled substance with the purpose to deliver (marijuana). This offense is a class D felony.
