A prominent marijuana reform group has won the first round of a contest that could land the winner an advertisement during the Superbowl. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) submitted a proposal to “bring the message of legalization to the masses” in Intuit’s “Small Business Big Game” contest, explaining on its entry page, “Together, we the people, are ending the US war on pot. With the last election and with the recent announcement from the attorney general in Washington DC, we are beautifully positioned to make sure a responsible, adult American citizen is never again arrested for enjoying the beauties of recreational marijuana.”
In the first round, NORML garnered the largest number of votes, according to the New York Daily News. The winner of the contest will have their ad produced and submitted for broadcast during the hottest broadcast spot of the year.
But Intuit may not agree to publish the marijuana ad. And even if it does, Fox would also have to agree to air the ad. Earlier this year, another marijuana policy ad was scheduled to air for the first time during a sporting event at the NASCAR Brickyard 400 in Indiana. But after the Drug Free America Foundation complained that the ad promoted drug abuse, the company that owns the jumbotron pulled the ad just hours before it was scheduled to air. The Marijuana Policy Project had already developed the ad and paid for its placement, after being solicited by the media company. Brand analyst Peter Madden told CNBC “Intuit leadership is surely wringing their collective hands over the matter.”
As the Huffington Post reports, Intuit once revoked its services from an Oregon medical clinic because it was providing medical marijuana recommendations. The proposed ad features a diverse group of people who have all been affected by marijuana prohibition and call for legalization.
