Medical marijuana bill gains more support in Wisconsin legislature

Rep. Barbara Toles (D-Milwaukee) has returned as a cosponsor of the Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act (JRMMA). With Rep. Toles, the total number of cosponsors currently sits at 15 with a couple days left to add more before the Dec. 22 deadline. The JRMMA is sponsored by Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison) and Sen. Jon Erpenbach (D-Waunakee).

The list as of Dec. 19 is, in addition to Rep. Pocan, Reps Terese Berceau (D-Madison), Janet Bewley (D-Ashland), Elizabeth Coggs (D-Milwaukee), Chris Danou (D- Trempealeau) Tamara Grigsby (D-Milwaukee), Fred Kessler (D-Milwaukee), Sandy Pasch (D-Whitefish Bay), Sondy Pope-Roberts (D-Middleton), Kelda Helen Roys (D-Madison), Chris Taylor (D-Madison), Rep. Barbara Toles (D-Milwaukee) and Josh Zepnick (D- Milwaukee). Senate sponsor Sen. Jon Erpenbach has been joined by Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee).

The 15 cosponsors so far is close to last session’s 17. While 4 Assembly cosponsors did not return this session (Hilgenberg, Sherman, Parisi, Black), 3 newly elected reps partially replaced them, (Bewley, C. Taylor, E. Coggs). Rep. Brett Hulsey (D-Madison), who replaced longtime medical cannabis bill cosponsor Rep. Spencer Black, so far will only go as far as offering “support” for the bill.

To find out who represents you, go here. To send an editable pre-written letter asking your state lawmakers to cosponsor the JRMMA or to thank them if they have already done so, go here. After the close of cosponsors at the end of the business day on Dec. 22, the JRMMA will be submitted for introduction and will receive respective Assembly and Senate bill numbers and committee assignments. It will be up to the committee chairs to decide if a public hearing will be held.
