Surrey says the number of marijuana grow-ops in the city has gone down by eighty-two percent.
All because of the Surrey Electrical Fire Safety Program, which started as a demonstration project in 2005, and was expanded in 2007.
Mayor Dianne Watts says over a thousand grow-ops have been shut down. She says back in 2005, the situation was bad, “We were seeing grow-ops that were being set up in rental houses, in cul-de-sacs where there were children. You know, we were seeing the proliferation of those grow-ops throughout the Lower Mainland, but certainly in the City of Surrey.”
Watts also says the program has led to a major decrease in residential fires linked to grow-ops.
