Donkey Kong Country

Old School Game Review

Donkey Kong Country

Developer: Rare

Publisher: Nintendo

Platform: Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Genre: Platforming

Released: 1994

Donkey Kong Country is a classic 2D sidescrolling platformer. It was also the first Donkey Kong title not to be produced or directed by Shigeru Miyamoto. In Donkey Kong Country you play Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy and are trying to collect all of Kong’s banana hoards that were stolen by the Kremlings. There are 40 different levels to the game and each one has it’s own unique theme and challenges(i.e. riding mine carts, swimming, swinging from vine to vine). As far as fighting enemies went you would lose health if you ran into them but you could barrel roll through them, jump on their heads, or use Donkey Kongs ground slam. There were enemies that would not be hurt by those attacks so you would need to throw barrels or use animals to defeat them. Like the rhino of awsomeness, you could ride on his back and just plow throw dosens of enemies. Plus you could find secret rooms by having him crash through walls and collect a ton of extra bananas.

When the player has lost all their lives, the game is over. However, the player can gain additional lives by collecting items scattered throughout the levels, including bananas, extra life balloons, golden letters that spell out K–O–N–G, and golden animal tokens that lead to bonus levels. There are also many secret passages that lead to bonus games where you can earn additional lives or bonus items.

Tanx’ review

Donkey Kong Country was one of the first video games I played as a kid that I actually became addicted to. It was in my opinion the best looking game for the Super Nintendo because it was the first game I saw to have a 3D style graphics where it didn’t look like a piece of colored paper moving across the screen. Having siblings meant that I got to play team and contest mode alot which was one of the reasons I became addicted to the game. We all know multiplayer done well will increase gameplay time, and they did it amazingly well for that generation of gaming. Another reason I loved the game so much was the animals you could use. Riding on the back of a stampeding rhino is always fun. If I was to be left with nothing but a Super Nintendo and one game of my choosing to play it would be Donkey Kong Country.
