RI medical pot dispensary looks to open in summer

The chief executive of one of Rhode Island’s new medical marijuana dispensaries says he hopes to be serving patients this summer.

Seth Bock of Greenleaf Compassionate Care Center in Portsmouth says the facility plans to open in June or July and eventually serve up to 500 patients. Greenleaf will grow and dispense marijuana on site.

The state Tuesday named three compassion centers legally authorized to dispense medical marijuana to qualified patients. Before opening, the centers must pass a state inspection, receive local occupancy permits and employees must pass criminal background checks.

The process is expected to take months.

Fifteen states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes.

The other authorized dispensaries are Summit Medical Compassion Center of Warwick, and the Thomas C. Slater Compassion Center of Providence.
