But if residents of Washington and Colorado use pot, they still will be in violation of federal laws even though state law no longer would get them into trouble with police.
President Obama has said the federal government has “bigger fish to fry” than going after small-time users in Colorado and Washington.
But the Justice Department still is deciding what to do.
It’s also an issue in the 18 states that have legalized medical marijuana.
In the meantime, the pro-pot forces are hoping to change the laws in other states. The Florida Cannabis Action Network has given Attorney General Pam Bondi a petition it says shows support for decriminalizing medical marijuana in Florida.
