Mohammad Zuhaili Suradi was instead sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and 20 strokes of the cane for possessing 385.89gm of cannabis at the Desaru Golden Beach Hotel’s car park as well as 74.41gm of cannabis in a room at the resort hotel on the same day.
The accused was also jailed for four years for possessing 0.39gm of heroin and 1.07gm of methamphetamine.
However, Mohammad Zuhaili and his friend Mohd Rezal Abu Samah, 26, were acquitted from a charge of possessing 1.22gm of heroin at the same resort but another accomplice Hairulanuar Mahmood, 40, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
Hairulanuar also pleaded guilty to possessing 6.49gm of heroin and was given a five-year jail sentence and 10 strokes of the rotan.
High Court Judge Kamardin Hashim ordered the prison sentences to run concurrently.
“I hope all the accused will turn over a new leaf after serving their sentences,” he said, adding that drug possession was a very serious offence.
DPP Rahimah Abd Majid prosecuted the case.
At a magistrate’s court, a man and his daughter claimed trial to robbing an elderly woman of RM20,000 worth of jewellery using hypnosis.
R. Ramansamy, 44, and daughter Kaliamah, 20, were charged with allegedly robbing K. Vijaya, 58, of her gold earrings and two gold bracelets worth RM20,000 near the Sultanah Aminah Hospital polyclinic on Dec 16 last year.
The facts of the case stated the duo had offered to send the victim home before hypnotising her and stealing her valuables.
The charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code carries a seven-year jail sentence and a fine or both upon conviction.
Both accused pleaded not guilty.
Magistrate Mazana Sinin fixed bail at RM6,000 for Ramansamy and RM2,000 for the daughter, and set Aug 4 and Aug 5 for trial.
DPPs Chuah Shyue Chien and Norashikin Ibrahim were prosecuting the case.
