Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Confirmed for DLC and Disc Release

Continuing Street Fighter’s long history of spawning numerous iterations of each major core release, Capcom confirmed at its recent Captivate press event that Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition will indeed hit Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. But unlike the standalone version of Super Street Fighter IV, it won’t be strictly limited to a retail release. While a fully playable, standalone boxed copy will be sold in stores, owners of the console versions of Super Street Fighter IV can simply purchase the update as downloadable content and fully interact with owners of the boxed copies.

The Arcade Edition DLC and disc adds four new characters to the mix — brothers Yun and Yang from Street Fighter III, as well as Evil Ryu and Oni — and brings further balancing tweaks, as well as fresh costumes for the fighters. Animated intro and ending sequences will also be added for the new combatants.

Additionally, the home version delivers new online play and sharing options, notably the Enhanced Endless Battle option, which lets you create lobbies with certain preset titles — such as seeking players using a certain character, or those with a PP in a certain range — for customized competition. Arcade Edition also includes an Elite Channel, where you can watch replays from fighters with a 3000+ PP rating, along with a Replay Follower feature that lets you track the replay updates for up to five favored players. Plus, the My Channel Advanced feature lets you share up to 50 files with the community.

Luckily, Super Street Fighter IV players who opt not to purchase the Arcade Edition DLC or disc won’t be punished with a fragmented community, as a free update will allow players of any version of Super Street Fighter IV to duke it out online. You’ll be able to fight against the new Arcade Edition fighters without buying the DLC or disc, though you can’t actually play as the new fighters. However, if you’re playing against a new fighter while using Super Street Fighter IV, the standard rules will apply for the battle as opposed to the balancing tweaks for the Arcade Edition.

The Arcade Edition DLC will launch worldwide on June 7 for $14.99 (U.S.) or the roughly equivalent amount in your region, while the console disc versions will hit stores later in the month (June 24 is confirmed for Europe) at a “price that won’t break the bank,” according to the Capcom presentation.

As Super Street Fighter IV was never released for PC, the Arcade Edition will only be available as a standalone full release for the platform. However, producer Yoshinori Ono stressed that development had just started on that iteration, suggesting that it won’t be released until after the console versions hit stores in June.
