Teen charged after car crashes into deputy cruiser

SPRING HILL — A 17-year-old boy was arrested Saturday night after the vehicle he was riding in crashed into a deputy cruiser along U.S. 19. The suspect, whose name is not being released by the newspaper because he is a juvenile, was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to sell, carrying a concealed firearm and providing a false name to law enforcement officer. Hernando County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeffrey Andrews was stopped at the intersection of U.S. 19 and Forest Oaks Boulevard when a vehicle rear-ended his cruiser.

During his investigation, he noticed a teen in the backseat of the vehicle smoking a cigarette, the deputy wrote in his affidavit. The teen gave him a false name and birth date, Andrews said. Eventually, Andrews discovered the boy was 17 years old who had two active juvenile pick-up orders out of Hernando. When Andrews searched the teen, he discovered two small plastic bags in his pocket, which contained marijuana, according to the affidavit.

Andrews stated more bags of marijuana and a .22-caliber revolver were located in the vehicle near in the area of where the suspect was seated. The teen was booked shortly before 9 p.m. at the Hernando County Jail and eventually transferred to a Department of Juvenile Justice facility in Ocala.
