Three arrested in Cross Lanes while trying to flush marijuana, police say

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Three people were arrested in Cross Lanes Wednesday night after police said they tried to flush about 2 pounds of marijuana down a kitchen sink disposal.

Kanawha County Sheriff’s deputies were notified of a domestic disturbance at Drexel Place Apartments in Cross Lanes at around 11:45 p.m., according to a news release.

A man fled on foot when deputies arrived, and a woman was uncooperative, refusing to give any information about the alleged disturbance, the release said.

Deputies obtained a search warrant to search the apartment, but the occupants allegedly refused to open the door. Deputies said they saw one of the men inside was using his body weight to hold the door closed.

During the incident, deputies said they saw one person running through the apartment and another attempting to flee through a back window.

Deputies broke out the front apartment window to get inside, the release said.

Once inside, deputies detained two men and one woman who they said were trying to destroy marijuana in the kitchen sink.

Deputies allegedly recovered about 2 pounds of marijuana and a “significant” amount of money.

Devon Gilliam, 34, of Columbus, Ohio, was arrested and charged with possession with the intent to deliver marijuana. He has a bail set at $25,000.

Gilliam’s sister, Nashima Gilliam, 32, of Cross Lanes, was charged with obstructing an officer. Larry Briscoe, 32, of Charleston, was also charged with obstructing an officer. They each have a bail set at $500 each.

The three are being held in South Central Regional Jail.

Nashima Gilliam’s 8-year-old son was also inside the residence during the incident. He was turned over to relatives at the scene, the release said.
