Wisconsin marijuana legalization supporters plan rally at governor’s budget speech

Wisconsin cannabis activists will be at the State Capitol, for two consecutive days next week to advocate for cannabis law reform. A trio of Wisconsin groups, the Wisconsin and Madison chapters of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws and the medical pot group Is My Medicine Legal YET? (IMMLY) were already planning a medical cannabis lobby day Wed. Jan. 16.

With the announcement that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker will be delivering his annual State of the State (SOTS) address at 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 15, Madison NORML has announced it will be filing for a permit to hold an annual vigil outside the SOTS address in the Capitol. Last year, the group’s permit application was mysteriously “lost” and cannabis advocates were barred from holding an event that dates back into the 1990’s or before.Madison NORML had filed suit against state officials over the permit denial but the litigation was later dismissed with the possibility of re-filing it left open.

Madison NORML already had their permit for the lobby day approved by Capitol officials. The lobby day will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 16 and there will be an information table in the Capitol Rotunda First Floor (one floor up).

IMMLY and Madison NORML have also made arrangements for two sessions of lobby training to help prepare activists for the day in Madison. The training will be facilitated by a former State Assembly legislative staffer. The sessions will discuss how a bill becomes law and techniques for effective citizen lobbying.
