World wheelchair dance champ banned

World champion wheelchair dancer Ihar Kisialiou was on Friday banned from competition for two years and stripped of his two gold medals after testing positive for a metabolite linked to cannabis.

The Belarussian was found to have the THC metabolite, which forms in the body after cannabis has been consumed, in a urine sample provided during the Wheelchair Dance World Championships held in Hanover, Germany, last November.

The dancer has been banned by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), based in Bonn, after failing to explain the test results.

As a result, Kisialiou, an able-bodied athlete, and his dance partner, wheelchair-bound Hanna Harchakova, will be stripped of the gold medals they won in Combi Standard Class 2 and Combi Latin Class 2.

Combi sees one dancer use a wheelchair with a standing able-bodied partner.

After being informed of the findings, Kisialiou admitted he did not have a Therapeutic Use Exemption to explain the adverse finding and accepted the suspension.

His ban dates from December 18 last and he will be disqualified with all the resulting consequences including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.
